Traffic queue for roadworks on Davitt St

Some residents of Davitt Street have consistently claimed that some councillors assured them of their support in opposing the current Davitt Street roadworks. The truthfulness of the resident’s claims has been called into question by a Councillor during a pre-election debate on Tipp FM. March4Tipp has called for clarification into what residents were actually told by Councillors.

In the following audio, Councillor Michael Fitzgerald can be heard saying “I know there are letters that I sent out and I make no apologies, that are appearing up on social media, but those letters were about parking spaces, that I would do my best not to see that not parking spaces would be lost, not that the works would not be carried out on Davitt Street”.

A resident who is concerned that their word is being questioned has provided March4Tipp with a letter under the signature of Councillor Fitzgerald. The letter, dated 140 days before the Council decision, stated that Councillor Fitzgerald “will do all that I can to have the project cancelled for all the reasons you outlined and I will be in touch when there is further developments”.

The resident in question says there was no further contact from Councillor Fitzgerald before he seconded the proposal of his party colleague Councillor John Crosse that the project should proceed.

March4Tipp says this issue is not about the roadworks themselves, but about seeking clarity about what assurances were given to residents at the time and whether those assurances were backed up by CouncillorsMarch4Tipp calls on Councillor Fitzgerald to clarify the apparent conflict between his statement on radio and the contents of his letter to a resident containing those very assurances.

March4Tipp recognises that Councillor Fitzgerald is a public representative of very high standing, but believes that clarification is needed about whether the residents were wrong in believing that he would oppose the roadworks.
